Fauna of the Ionian Sea

The fauna of the Ionian Sea is very rich, with more than 500 species of fish. 70 species of fish are endemic, including some species of Batoidea, Labrus, Syngnathidae. The sea is inhabited by bottlenose dolphin, Cheloniidae, octopus.

Fishes of the Ionian Sea

The most common species in the Ionian Sea are Nile perch, Muraena, Bluefish, Atlantic stargazer, Pollachius virens, Swordfish, Scaldfish, Mullus barbatus, Atlantic bluefin tuna. Engraulis, Flounder, Tuna, Mullet, Mackerel are  harvested commercially.

Achelata, Crab, Octopus, Squid and Oyster are also commercially harvested in the Ionian Sea. 

Dangerous Inhabitants of the Ionian Sea

There are several poisonous and dangerous sea creatures that can cause problems for holidaymakers on the Ionian coast: Trachinus, Hermodice carunculata, Muraena, jellyfish, sea urchins, Conidae, rabbit fish.

Are there sharks in the Ionian Sea?

The southern Ionian Sea is home to the blue shark, but there have been no more than 60 recorded sightings with humans in 100 years.
