Fauna of the Bohol Sea

Inter-island sea of the Pacific Ocean in the southern part of the Philippine archipelago. It is located between the islands of Siquijor, Bohol and Leyte in the north and the island of Mindanao in the south. The major bays in Mindanao Island are Iligan, Gingoog, Macalahar and Butuan. The largest river flowing into this sea, the Agusan, crosses almost the entire island of Mindanao from south to north. The sea is connected to the Philippine Sea by the Surigao Strait, to the Camotes Sea by the Canigao Channel and the Cebu Strait, and to the Sulu Sea by the strait between Negros Island and the Zamboanga Peninsula. Bohol Sea is very warm, the water heats up to 30 degrees, so its underwater world is very diverse.

Fishing in Bohol Sea

Commercial fish species include sardines, anchovies, Pacific herring, mackerel, sea bass, cod, flounder, and saira. The sea is home to the Far Eastern salmon. Shrimp, mussels and cephalopods, oysters, squid and scallops are caught here. Many tourists and residents themselves are fond of sea fishing in the open waters of the sea. The main catch is tuna, Pacific herring, sea bass and mackerel.

The most common fish in the Bohol Sea are: Tilapia, Grouper, Mackerel, Salmon, Goby, Porcupinefish, Milkfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Philippine Anchovy, Striped Snakehead, Rabbitfish, Indo-Pacific Blue Marlin, Barramundi, Silver Perch.

Diving in the Bohol Sea

The exotic underwater world of Bohol Sea attracts thousands of divers from all over the world. This is a great opportunity to see unusual sponges, sea turtles and rare fish species such as reef stonefish and humphead wrasse. There are also sea snakes, manta rays, sea cucumbers, octopus, brittle stars, sand dollars and starfish. Its marine fauna abound with amphiprion, pterois, barracuda, dolphins, huge coral formations and other inhabitants of tropical seas.

Mammals of the Bohol Sea 

Dolphins and whales can be seen in the sea. The ideal time for them is from March to June. The most common are dugong and manatee. Blue whales have returned here, which is rare in Asian waters.

Reptiles of the Bohol Sea

Bohol's sea waters are home to the large Green sea turtle, the only species of the genus Chelonia, which gets its name from the green fat under its shell because it feeds exclusively on sea grass.

Shellfish in the Bohol Sea

Molluscs are most abundant in tropical seas. Therefore, univalves (nautilus, conus, tiger cowry, golden cowry) and bivalves (oyster, clam, abalone, scallop, perna viridis) live comfortably in the Bohol Sea.
