Identification

They have elongated bodies, canine-like fangs, and fine scales.

Fish colouring

The absence of black markings on the tip of the dorsal fin is a feature that distinguishes this species from Chirocentrus dorab. Whitefin also lacks black on the anterior part of the anal fin.

Distribution

Found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, mainly in Indonesia and Oceania, and possibly the Mascarene Islands.

Habitat

Marine; tropical; pelagic-neritic species. Depth range 0 to 150 m.

Size

Can reach 100 cm (39 inches) in length and about 410 g (14 ounces) in weight.

Behavior

They live in coastal waters.

They feed on small fish and crustaceans.
