Identification
This species is known as sweetlips because of the large elastic lips around the mouth.
Features of fish fins
Dorsal fin solid, 9-14 spines, 11-26 soft rays. Anal fin has 3 spines, 6-18 soft rays.
Fish colouring
The body is grayish silver with small black spots on the back and tail.
Distribution
Widespread in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean: from the Persian Gulf to Sri Lanka.
Habitat
Marine tropical reef species. Depth range 20-200 m.

Maximum length 83 cm. Maximum declared weight 6.9 kg.
Behavior
It inhabits coastal waters. Most commonly found near reefs and shipwrecks, they often swim in schools with other fish.
Food and feeding habits
They feed on shrimp, squid and small fish.

Egg-laying, clearly mating during reproduction.

It is caught throughout its range, but is rare.

Harmless. Sold fresh. Juveniles are used in aquariums.
