Identification
Nemipterus: Greek, nema, -atos = filament + Greek, pteron = wing, fin.
This species is characterised by the following features: suborbital process absent, preopercle with three transverse rows of scales, axillary scales present.

The pectoral fins are long, reaching to or just above the level of the anus. The pelvic fins are very long, reaching to or just above the level of the anus. A line drawn from the posterior edge of the dorsal fin reaches the dorsal profile approximately 2-6 scale rows before the beginning of the dorsal fin. The upper caudal fin blade is slightly longer than the lower, with a yellow tip.
Fish colouring
The upper body of the Ornate Threadfin Bream is pinkish, the underside is silvery white.
Distribution
Widespread in the western Pacific: from the Andaman Sea to the Solomon Islands.
Habitat
A tropical marine bottom dweller. Its depth range is from 10 to 80 metres.
Size
Maximum length for males is 23 cm. Total length - 15.0 cm.
Behavior
Does not migrate. Found on muddy or sandy bottoms.
Food and feeding habits
It feeds mainly on small shrimps, squid, small fish and bottom-dwelling animals.
Reproduction
Females predominate in small sizes and males in larger sizes due to the faster growth rate of males.

Of minor commercial importance in fisheries.
