Identification
Gosztonyia antarctica have an elongated anguilliform body. The head is broad and large, with the lips protruding forward. There is no swim bladder.
Features of fish fins
The dorsal and anal fins are long and completely fused with the small undivided caudal fin. The pectoral fins are usually large.
Fish colouring
The colouring of these fish is pale. The dorsal part is grey-brown.
Distribution
Gosztonyia antarctica is only known from the Bellingshausen Antarctic Sea.
Habitat
Marine benthic fishes. Found at a depth of 615m.
Size
A total of four specimens were caught, each 25 to 30 cm long.
Behavior
Gosztonyia antarctica live directly on the bottom, preferring soft muddy bottoms where they can burrow and bury their eggs.
