These fish have the rounded body, spiny dorsal fin and split tail characteristic of this group.

Fish colouring
Golden damselfish are yellow with blue or purple spots on the snout. Some individuals have dark spots on their flanks.
Distribution
Western Pacific: Andaman Sea and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to the Rowley Shoals (eastern Indian Ocean) and New Caledonia. Recently recorded in Tonga.
Habitat
A marine tropical species. Occupies outer reefs, deep lagoons and areas with ocean currents. Depth range from 0 to 60 m, usually 12 to 45 m.
Size
These fish reach 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) in length.
Behavior
They are solitary or live in small groups. They do not migrate. Adults are found on steep outer reefs, sometimes in deep lagoons and along channel walls, usually in habitats subject to currents and where gorgonian corals and long algae are abundant. Juveniles in small groups are often found among large sea fans or black corals.
Food and feeding habits
The diet of the golden damselfish consists of zooplankton.
Reproduction
Egg-laying, they mate during reproduction. Eggs are found on the ground and are attached to the substrate. Eggs are usually laid on dry branches. Males guard and care for the eggs.

This species has commercial value in fisheries.

Harmless. This species is sometimes found in the aquarium trade.
