Identification

Characterized by ctenoid scales, weak teeth, and only one row of gill rakers on the fourth gill arch (the posterior row is underdeveloped).

Features of fish fins

Dorsal spines (total): 12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-13; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 12-13. Adult caudal fin has filamentous processes.

Fish colouring

They have a yellow body with a black stripe in front of the white base of the tail. 

Distribution

Western Pacific: from Indonesia to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia. Recently recorded from Tonga.

Habitat

A marine tropical species. Adults inhabit coral-rich areas of clear lagoons and coastal reefs. Depth range 12-120 m.  

Size

Reach 4 centimeters in length.

Behavior

Black barred chromis do not migrate. Diurnal species. They occur singly or in small groups and remain close to densely branched coral thickets. These fish are very territorial in their designated areas. 

Food and feeding habits

Omnivorous fish. In nature they feed on zooplankton and algae.

Reproduction

The males organize a nest, such as a hollow in the rock, where spawning takes place. Eggs are laid in this nest and glued to the substrate. The male takes care of the eggs. After a few days, the fry hatch from the eggs. 

Fishing

Have no commercial value in the fishery.

Relationship with a person

Harmless. Can be found in aquariums.
