There are two adult forms: long-tailed and black.

Fish colouring
There are two varieties of adult coloration. Adults from the western Pacific are brown on the front and yellow on the back. In the area from the Andaman Sea to Japan, adults are black. Both species are found on the island of Bali. Juveniles are yellow with two horizontal black stripes.
Distribution
This species is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. In the Indian Ocean, they are found around Sri Lanka, the Andaman Sea, Indonesia and Australia. In the Pacific Ocean, they are found around Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Hawaii.
Habitat
Tropical marine species. They inhabit coral reefs and coral-rich lagoons at depths of 2-21 meters (6.6-68.9 feet).
Size
Adults can grow up to 5.1 inches (13 centimeters).
Behavior
They are solitary and territorial. They do not migrate. They become more aggressive as they age.
Food and feeding habits
Omnivorous fish. They feed mainly on algae, crustaceans, tunicates and salps.
Reproduction
During breeding, females lay eggs in the substrate. The males then guard and aerate the eggs until they hatch.
Fishing
Have no commercial importance. Of no interest to fishermen.
Relationship with a person
Harmless. Sometimes these fish are kept as aquarium fish.
