Identification

Asian sheepshead wrasses have narrow, elliptical bodies. They have a characteristic bulge on the head and thick mandibles. The bulges and mandibles of females and juveniles are smaller than those of adult males. 

Features of fish fins

The dorsal fin of these fish is continuous, the barbed part of it is usually longer than its posterior part. The anal fin is similar to the soft part of the dorsal fin. The pectoral fins are well developed and are used for swimming. 

Fish colouring

The body colour of these fish is dark red with a light red belly. Their body colour changes with age. Adults have white lines running down their sides and fins, except for the pectoral fins which are covered with a complex black pattern. Juveniles and fry have a different colouration and are usually orange rather than red. 

Distribution

Native to the western Pacific Ocean, it inhabits rocky reef areas around the Korean Peninsula, China, Japan and the Ogasawara Islands. 

Habitat

A subtropical marine benthic species.

Size

The total length of this species can reach 100 cm (39 inches) and the maximum recorded weight for this species is 14.7 kg (32 pounds).

Behavior

They are territorial and very jealous of their possessions. A male will form a harem of several females.

Food and feeding habits

The diet of this species includes molluscs and crustaceans living in shallow waters and coral reefs.

Reproduction

The Asian sheepshead wrasse is a hermaphrodite, which means it has both male and female organs and can change sex. All are born female and gradually change sex as they mature. 

An egg-laying species, with clear mating during the breeding season.

Semicossyphus reticulatus is not a commercial fish.
