The fauna of the Ionian Sea is very rich, with more than 500 species of fish. 70 species of fish are endemic, including some species of Batoidea, Labrus, Syngnathidae. The sea is inhabited by bottlenose dolphin, Cheloniidae, octopus.

The most common species in the Ionian Sea are Nile perch, Muraena, Bluefish, Atlantic stargazer, Pollachius virens, Swordfish, Scaldfish, Mullus barbatus, Atlantic bluefin tuna. Engraulis, Flounder, Tuna, Mullet, Mackerel are harvested commercially.

The southern Ionian Sea is home to the blue shark, but there have been no more than 60 recorded sightings with humans in 100 years.
