Fish that breed in the spring (herring, pike, perch, roach, ide, and many others).
Male zander, perch, ruffe, pike and roach belong to the group of fish with short spring spawning. They are characterised by a distinct alternation of maturation stages, complete completion of spermatogenesis by the pre-spawning period, rapid sperm recoil, transition to the proboscis state and the subsequent emergence of a new wave of spermatogenesis. Spring spawners may complete spermatogenesis as early as autumn (zander, perch, pike) and then overwinter with gonads in the IV stage. In roach, spermatogenesis does not end until spring, just before the start of the breeding season, and males overwinter with gonads in stages II-III.
