Scales are bone formations on the body of a fish that protect the body from damage, penetration of micro-organisms, give the body elasticity, suppleness, smoothing out wrinkles and irregularities of the skin, giving the fish greater speed. Some slow swimming fish (catfish) may not have scales. There are several types of scales: placoid, cosmoid, ganoid and bone, which can be cycloid and ctenoid.
