Mariculture – marine cultivation or aquaculture of organisms in tanks, pens, ponds or cages (onshore mariculture) or net enclosed areas in the open sea (offshore mariculture). Fish are usually raised to market size. A marine hatchery is also a mariculture facility but fish are usually released as young.
An example of the onshore mariculture is the farming of marine fish, including finfish and shellfish like prawns, or oysters and seaweed in saltwater ponds.
