Limnoculture is the industrial cultivation of hydrobionts in fresh water bodies. A distinction is made between pond, pasture and industrial aquaculture.

Pond aquaculture is mainly carried out in ponds or watered pits. Also in irrigation canals or flooded rice checks, i.e., irrigation systems and reclamation facilities. This type of aquaculture includes ornamental fish in ponds.

Grazing aquaculture uses the natural forage base of a water body. In this case aquaculture is practically not limited by the limits of a water body, i.e. it can be also rather large in size.

Industrial aquaculture involves breeding and (or) maintenance, cultivation of aquaculture objects in pools, in closed water supply facilities, as well as in cages and other technical devices installed in water bodies.
