• Eyelids

A fixed annular fold around the eye of most bony fish. Sharks have a blinking membrane (third eyelid) in addition to the upper fixed eyelid and movable lower eyelid. In mullet and some herrings skin, overlapping the eye, form fatty eyelids in the form of a transparent thick film, give the eye a streamlined shape and serve to protect the eye from the action of oncoming water currents.
