Identification

The species was described by Albert William Herre in 1926, originally as part of the genus Tachysurus.

The body of these fish is silvery gray in color.

Distribution

Occupies the waters of Asia, including the Philippines, Taiwan and possibly Borneo. 

Habitat

Bentopelagic species. Prefers tropical brackish and fresh waters.

The maximum reaches 34 centimeters (13 inches).

Behavior

Swim in muddy coastal waters, estuaries, bays and lagoons.

Food and feeding habits

Feeds mainly on the bottom. The diet consists of insects such as dragonfly nymphs, mosquito larvae, insect eggs, as well as snails, microcrystals, shrimps, fish and diatom algae. 

Reproduction

They feed the eggs in their mouths.
